Description
Uncaria Tomentosa is a climbing plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the South American continent, in particular it inhabits the forests of Peru, Colombia and Brazil; it can reach a height of 3-5 m and has bright yellow goblet-shaped flowers. Its curious name derives from two peculiarities of the leaves that have a fluff (tomentosa) on the surface, while at the base they develop hook-shaped protuberances (hence the name uncaria) used to cling to other plants and reach bright areas. Known to Peruvian curanderos for treating wounds, ulcerations, pains, inflammations and ailments related to the puerperium, Uncaria is today considered an immunostimulating herbal remedy effective to combat colds, inflammatory states that cause pain in the bones, muscles and joints or alteration of bacterial flora and fluid retention.
